I-Octane

I-Octane, born Byiome Muir in Sandy Bay, Clarendon, Jamaica, is a modern dancehall and reggae artist known for his energetic performances and lyrics that touch on social commentary, romance, and faith. He was initially known as Richie Rich when he started at Penthouse Records, but after being introduced to producer Junior Arrows, he adopted the new moniker, which combines the Rastafarian “I” with “high-octane” fuel to reflect his performance style. 
  • Early life and education: Muir grew up in Sandy Bay, a community east of May Pen. He attended Palmers Cross All-Age School and Garvey Maceo High School, and also briefly studied architecture at Knox Community College before focusing on his music career.
  • Career beginnings: He began recording at age 16 with producer Donovan Germain at Penthouse Records, releasing his first singles as Richie Rich. His name change to I-Octane occurred after he signed with Junior Arrows of Arrows Recording Company.
  • Rise to fame: I-Octane gained initial acclaim in 2007 with the roots reggae track “Stab Vampire”. He followed this success with chart-topping songs like “Mama You Alone” and “Lose A Friend” in 2009. His reputation as an established star was cemented with a performance at Reggae Sumfest in 2011.
  • Musical style and lyrical themes: His music blends dancehall and reggae rhythms and often addresses social issues, faith, romance, and compassion for the less fortunate, similar to predecessors like Sizzla and Capleton.
  • Notable achievements:
    • He has topped both local and international reggae charts multiple times.
    • He was a brand ambassador for Digicel, Busta, and Golden Eagle Brand.
    • He has toured extensively in the Caribbean, Europe, and Asia.
    • His debut album, “Crying To The Nation,” was released in 2012.
    • His second album, “My Journey,” was released in 2014.
